Dear Colleagues!
Holocaust as a unique tragedy of European Jewry
organized by national-socialist regime of Germany with support obtained
from various collaborators is a serious problem of modern culture.
Has the International Tribunal in Nuremberg fulfilled its task?
Is it possible to guarantee prevention of genocide of any form?
What happened on the territory of Europe in 1933-1945 demands careful
study, understanding, keeping the memory about the Holocaust (Shoah)
of Jewish people for our descendants. The countries in modern Europe
and European culture as the whole pay much attention to study and
teaching of the Holocaust history. We consider the Holocaust history
to be a page in the history of Jewish people as well as an integral
part in Ukrainian and European history of the XX century.
After Stockholm International Forum on Holocaust problems, Ukraine
took real steps to save the memory about the Holocaust. In particular,
there appeared fundamental and regional studies of Holocaust problems,
teaching of this matter gets more importance in the system of school
and university education. Nevertheless, in 2002 there still was
no any academic, scientific-educational Center of Holocaust history
in Ukrainian capital. To our mind, actuality of the creation of
such Center is quite evident.
In March 2002, in Kiev, Ukrainian Center for Holocaust studies started
its activity. The Center functions as a charitable foundation by
the Department of Jewish History and Culture in Institute for Political
and Ethnic Studies, Ukrainian National Academy of Sciences. The
Center plans to conduct complex scientific studies and pedagogic
activity in the sphere of Holocaust history first of all on the
territory of Ukraine, and of course on Europe’s territory on the
whole.
The Center co-operates with scientific and public organizations
and hopes to get support from various state and private institutions
and foundations, both in Ukraine and other countries of the world.
The major directions in activity of the Center are scientific research
and pedagogical. In scientific sphere we plan to create data base
of archive sources and process archives, witnesses, audio and video
materials, bibliography, issue original and translated scientific
literature dedicated to the problems of Holocaust history, issue
scientific bulletin and journal to the above-mentioned problem,
conduct scientific conferences and seminars.
In pedagogical sphere, we plan to develop and issue programs, teaching
aid-books, textbooks on the problems of teaching Holocaust history
in secondary and higher schools of Ukraine, conduct educational
and methodical seminars for pupils, students and teachers.
Thus, creation of data base, preparation of concepts and methods
for educational programs, issuing books of “Ukrainian Holocaust
Library” series, organizational and lecturing activity – are
very actual for Ukrainian society of today. Study and understanding
of the world history events is the only way to the world science.
Creation of such Center in Kiev is a necessary condition on this
complicated way.
